Does TRT Lower Your Natural Testosterone Production?

Exogenous testosterone suppresses the HPG axis while you are on it.

Does TRT lower natural testosterone production?

Yes. The hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis reads the extra testosterone and reduces GnRH, LH, and FSH. Your testes then make less of their own testosterone and often less sperm.

Blood tests on TRT largely reflect the medicine you injected or applied, not “your natural T plus the shot.” That is why we still measure levels — to see whether the replacement dose is in range.

Does natural production come back if I stop?

Often it recovers over weeks to months, faster after short courses and slower after years of suppression or after prior anabolic steroid use. Recovery is not guaranteed on a calendar. Stopping should be supervised.

FAQs

Is suppression dangerous?

It is expected. The clinical issues are fertility, testicular volume, and how you feel if you stop suddenly — not that the axis “forgot how to work” overnight.

Can I take TRT every other month to protect natural T?

Intermittent unsupervised cycling is not standard medical TRT and still suppresses the axis. Discuss duration openly instead.
