Is TRT safer at 41 than at 70?
Chronological age is a weak standalone predictor. Disease burden, hematocrit, and follow-up quality matter more.
Is TRT Safe After Age 40?
Age 40 is not a cutoff — cardiovascular, prostate, and hematocrit screening still matter.
It can be, when hypogonadism is confirmed and you are monitored. Age 40 is a common time for symptoms and for conversations about PSA and heart-risk factors — it is not a forbidden zone and not a free pass.
TRAVERSE enrolled middle-aged and older men with hypogonadism and cardiovascular disease or risk and found testosterone gel noninferior to placebo for major adverse cardiac events. Your personal history (prior clot, untreated prostate cancer, hematocrit, sleep apnea) can still make TRT a poor fit.
Expect a more explicit cardiovascular history, blood pressure, and age-appropriate prostate discussion. Hematocrit monitoring matters at every age and becomes no less important as you get older.
